The Fang, well known for their reliquary figures, also performed intricately carved masks during various ritual ceremonies. Among them, the white-painted masks associated with the Ngil society are famous for their elegant abstractions of the human face. These Ngil masks have been described as having a "heart-shaped face," where the facial features emphasize the refined curves of the orbital arches above the eyes, as well as a marked line of the long, tapered nose, which ends above a subtly carved mouth at the bottom of the chin, thus completing the facial abstraction.

The Fang used these masks as part of their secret societies. Members of this male society wore Ngil masks when initiating new members and persecuting offenders. The mask wearers, dressed in raffia costumes and accompanied by their assistants, would appear in the village after dark, illuminated by the flickering glow of torches.

• For your own safety and that of those around you, always turn off the electricity before installing a light fixture.
• Be careful when installing the object, avoid tripping, slipping or injury.
