These sturdy-rimmed baskets are the pinnacle of the Bathonga basket weavers' art, an ancient tradition of Zimbabwe and southern Zambia. Made from the leaves of the Ilala palm, these treasures begin life as a woven square and transform, almost magically, into a perfect roundness. The delicate pattern adorning the edges, nicknamed "the serpent's belly," recalls the scales of a molting reptile, creating a hypnotic rhythm.

The palm fibers, dyed with tree bark, reveal subtle nuances that add to the authenticity of each piece. These baskets, far from being simple objects, possess an ancestral function: their shape and strength were ideal for threshing and separating grains. Today, they are still used for this same task. Sometimes called "grandmother's baskets," they embody a know-how that younger generations struggle to pass on, making each basket even more precious, a true legacy of the land and the hands that shaped it.

• For your own safety and that of those around you, always turn off the electricity before installing a light fixture.
• Be careful when installing the object, avoid tripping, slipping or injury.
